exactly am I in story and when am I out of it? Before and beneath our
stories, there are temporal rhythms and the contours of other intimate
bodies and familiar spaces. These are surely felt before the words are
made to fit in. And what about writing, that strange and recent twist
in human history? It always involves a kind of gait, the rocking motion
of prosody that travels through imagined rooms and landscapes. It
guides the story that is being wri en, a story symbolic of the forms of
human feeling.
